"I have been having organ lessons for a year. After learning the piano, it is amazing to explore all the different sounds the organ can make and the atmosphere it creates, as most instruments only make one main sound. Having to coordinate pedalling with the manuals has pushed me out of my comfort zone in a good way! Also, the acoustics of the Lady Chapel are not like anywhere else I have played an instrument. As a chorister, it helps me to appreciate the effort and complexity of playing the organ and hearing the same acoustics I sing in from a different angle. Having lessons gave me the confidence to take part in Anna Lapwood's Cambridge organ day and play organs in different chapels with young people from all over the country. It is an unusual instrument for a young person to learn and I highly recommend it to others as we need organists in the future."

“After completing my Grade 5 piano exam, Dr Newton [Music Administrator and Piano Tutor] kindly recommended me try learning the organ, Mr Mannings [Director of Music] agreed and I was very thankful. I had grown a deep interest by every Sunday’s Eucharist and Evensong and a lot more services, I would hear a person playing the organ, and I was attracted by its sound, of how many instruments can be played in an organ and how the range of the pitch is very large and I loved how your feet and your hands play together, pistons to control different pitches and instruments. I always hoped for the chance to learn it myself. Thanks to Mr. Mannings’ permission in allowing me to study the organ, my dream came true. Now, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity and eager to continue learning this instrument.”

Lorcan

“My name is Lorcan and I am very thankful that the Brereton Memorial Fund to have been so kind to fund my organ scholarship at Liverpool Cathedral under the tutoring of Mr Wells. I have been working on the organ for 1.5 years now and I have been encouraged to play new exciting pieces. I have learnt a great deal about technique for example and many other crucial components of being an organist. I regularly practise on the organ in my school, including the special Willis organ - the scholarship has helped me thrive playing my favourite instrument and I am looking forward to continue learning, and to one day become a professional organist.”
